Picture walking into a kitchen showroom. Everything looks perfect — the cabinets are beautiful, the doors close quietly, the drawers slide in and out without a sound. Now picture those same cabinets five years later. The material used to build them is really what decides whether that kitchen still looks new, or needs to be rebuilt.

Plywood is often described as waterproof. That’s not entirely true. Plywood is made of layers of wood bonded with glue, and while it does resist water reasonably well, it isn’t perfect. The edges are the weak point — once they’re damaged, water gets in and the problems start. In a real kitchen, plywood near the sink can begin breaking down within about five years of everyday use.

MDF, or medium-density fibreboard, is another common cabinet material. It’s popular because it’s easy to work with and takes paint beautifully. But when MDF takes on water, the damage is permanent — there’s no drying it back out.

Beyond Water: The Other Things a Kitchen Board Needs to Survive

Moisture is the headline issue, but it’s rarely the only one. A kitchen board also needs to:

Resist termites, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where subterranean termites are a genuine risk to any wood-based product, even when treated. Resist flame and control smoke, since kitchens are, by definition, the room in the house with the highest fire risk. Boards with a recognised flammability rating — such as a UL94 V0 rating, which means a material self-extinguishes within seconds rather than sustaining a flame — and a low smoke-developed index matter more in a kitchen than almost anywhere else in the home. Does Moisture-Resistant MDF Solve the Problem?

It helps, but it doesn’t eliminate the underlying issue — MDF is still a compressed wood-fibre product, and wood fibre’s relationship with water doesn’t change just because a resin additive slows absorption down. It buys time rather than removing the risk entirely.

What Should I Specifically Ask My Kitchen Fabricator About Moisture Resistance?
