How to Choose the Right Exterior Panels for Indian Weather Conditions

India does not have one climate. It has many — and they are extreme in ways that most material specifications written in air-conditioned offices fail to properly account for.

If you’re choosing an exterior panel material that has to hold up in any one of these conditions — let alone more than one — you need to understand what actually causes panels to fail outdoors, and why. Marketing language about “weather resistance” won’t tell you that.

What Outdoor Conditions Actually Do to Panel Materials

In materials that contain plastic — WPC being the common example — UV triggers a degradation process called photo-oxidation. The surface gradually becomes chalky and brittle, and the structural integrity of the material weakens along with it.

Moisture cycling is what happens when a material repeatedly absorbs water and releases it — through rain, dew, humidity, and drying — over and over again across seasons. And once those entry points open up, water and pests have a way in.

Thermal expansion and contraction creates similar stress through temperature rather than moisture. Materials that expand significantly in heat and contract in cold — plastics are particularly susceptible — generate stress at fixing points, joints, and panel edges.

Salt air. Within a few kilometres of the sea, exterior panels face a corrosion and degradation environment significantly more demanding than inland locations.

Biological growth — algae, moss, and fungal staining — occurs on surfaces that retain moisture in the grain or texture.

Treated plywood and exterior-grade plywood

A genuine improvement over timber in several ways — better moisture resistance, no painting or sealing required, and less termite-prone than solid wood.
