Walk into any furniture showroom, browse any manufacturer’s website, or ask a carpenter what board to use, and you’ll get a confident answer—usually for whichever material that particular business happens to sell. That’s not really dishonesty. Most people in the furniture supply chain specialise in one material, and specialising tends to breed loyalty.

MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)

MDF is engineered wood—wood fibres bound with resin and pressed under heat into a dense, uniform board. It’s popular for good reason: it’s smooth, easy to machine, takes paint and veneer finishes cleanly, and is usually the cheapest option of the four.

Where it struggles: moisture, without exception. Standard MDF swells and loses structural integrity the moment it takes on water, and even the “moisture-resistant” grades are only resistant at the surface—cut into one, and the exposed core behaves like any other MDF. It also releases formaldehyde over its lifespan, at levels that vary by manufacturer and binder quality.

WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite)
